Engine shed road is a conventionally controlled (not dcc) layout that aims to represent a typical steam shed somewhere in england. however, by some strange quirk of geography it seems to be visited at times by engines of all regions and, occasionally, other nations.. Freds tips and johns engine shed hi al, layout is in semi final stage with electrical, some background and reality checking to tweak. i dont think i will let in end. to much fun . thanks for all your help and the help from the worldly modelers that i read every day. The first thing to know is the 'sequence of operation', for arrival and dispatch of a locomotive. from what i believe is common practice upon arrival to the engine depot is, 1. coaling the tender 2. watering the tender, 3. clearing the firebox and smoke box of ash, 4. turning the locomotive and 5. on shed ready for the next duty..
To my eyes that looks a very complicated layout. i would have thought it better if the relief line was nearest to the shed, as the light engine movements on and off shed would be much neater without all that criss-crossing of the mainlines.. Some 9 months later the finished engine was tested on the track (laid in the garden during the summer) hauling the solitary wagon. loco shed and goods shed. after the next few months of cleaning track and wheels every few minutes, the conclusion was arrived at that the salt air in felixstowe was not conducive to electric garden railway working.. If you decide to base your layout on an actual engine shed you must have plenty of information and photos of that depot to produce the model, if not then you can produce a layout to sit your needs and size availability..
